PRESS RELEASE FROM DELAVAL
A Tetra Laval Food for Development project in Kenya is improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Nkosi Mkhize, DeLaval Market Development Manager for East Africa has created a milk quality kit with DeLaval products for the project.
Tetra Laval Food for Development is working on a dairy development project called KEMDAP (Kenya Market Led Dairy Development Project), which is funded by SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) and implemented by Heifer International. The project works through a state-owned Tetra Pak processing customer, NKCC.
“Lynda McDonald from Food for Development reached out to me to create a milk quality kit with DeLaval products for the project. I worked closely together with our dealer in Kenya to make it happen. It’s great to see that the kits are well received”, says Nkosi Mkhize, Market Development Manager for East Africa.
The project aims to increase milk production and improve milk quality for the local farmers, and a part of that is to provide best practice milk quality kits to help improve milk quality. The milk quality kits have gone out to 11 farms who will be used as reference farms for implementing best practices. The 11 farmers’ experience with the milk quality kit will inform the further adaptation and distribution of the kit to other farmers in the future.
The overall goal for the project is to improve the livelihoods of up to 30 000 smallholder farmers in Kenya and increase their household income by increasing profitability through milk production and improving efficiencies, and focusing on empowering women and youth to play an active role in the dairy value chain.
The four key objectives for the project are to increase the incomes of participating farmers and households, increase milk production, improve milk quality as well as increasing milk collection volumes in milk collection centres.
