Turning the dairy sector into a net-zero emissions industry is something that can only be achieved together. John Deere and DeLaval have joined efforts to create a digital eco-system to help dairy farmers improve the efficiency and sustainability of their operations.

A first version of the Milk Sustainability Center will be released during summer 2024 but you can already read more about it on the new website. “This is only the start, the Milk Sustainability Center has great potential, and we welcome more partners to join,” says Lars Bergmann, Executive Vice President, Digital Services at DeLaval.

Dairy farmers will use the Milk Sustainability Center to monitor nutrient use efficiency (NUE) for nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), for their entire farm, specific fields, or their herd.

The nutrient use efficiency (NUE) indicates the ratio of input and output of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Using nutrients more efficiently will decrease environmental footprint and increase profitability. MSC will recommend how to reduce nutrient losses to the air and groundwater leading to higher nutrient use efficiency (NUE).

Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is a scientific terminology and a way to normalize various greenhouse gases to make nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon dioxide (CO2) comparable. MSC will find the contributing factors to the footprint on a farm and recommend actions for lowering that footprint.

MSC will provide data to allow dairy farmers to compare their performance to other dairy operations, thus being able to identify key areas of improving their sustainability score.

The system will also enable a view of the farms’ sustainability potential. Through simulations, farmers can assess different scenarios and review what impact it would have on nutrient use efficiency, carbon footprint, or profitability when implementing a certain technology or changing a certain strategy.
